The Volkswagen T1 vans are iconic for being the auto definition of a generation. Some associate them with the hippies and the 1960s and 1970s youngsters who always looked for new ways to have fun. Others rather see these puppies as the perfect student, road-trip vehicle. Either way, these classic vans represent something in the industry’s history and will always be cool no matter how old the model gets.

Each of the artists was given a white van, similar to those decorating the company’s new concept stores, according to Design Father. Each received some key words that would help them built the design. Slovakian-born and based in London Martina Paukova was asked to revolve her work around the two words: Palm Springs. So she adorned her van with pictures of young people enjoying life with a lot of colors and dynamics.

Kyle Platts, a British artist who has been working with Vice magazine and The New York Times, has turned his van in a vehicle version of his sketchbook. Platts’ works include topics ranging from social criticism to sheer entertainment, some of which can be recognized on the T1 as well.

The next artist to unleash his passion is Paris-born artist Shoboshobo who works on a variety of fields within graphic design and has also entered the music world. Inspired by the Japanese culture which he is a great fan of his main style features are the lack of colors and a personal universe of peculiar figures.

The fourth van in line was reinvented by Michela Picchi, an Italian cross-disciplinary artist currently living in Berlin. She produces creative ideas for magazines brands and other similar ventures. Her works draw inspiration from collage and psychedelia. “My van is about all my characters and styles all at once,” she explainsn in the video we listed below.
