Four Killer Custom BMW R nineT Bikes Expected from Japan

The BMW R nineT is the last machine which uses the old air- and oil-cooled version of the R1200 boxer engine, and is also a bike engineered to make it count in the custom scene, with a special architecture and particular features which make it modding-ready.

After sending European custom builders Urban Motor and El Solitario an R nineT each to develop their own projects, BMW has turned an eye to one of the most intriguing custom markets on the planet, Japan. Four builders have been chose by Ola Stenegard, the “father” of the R nineT, and their received 4 boxer beasts to do have their way with them.

BMW has chosen Kaichiro Kurosu, Go Takamine, Hideya Togashi and Shiro Nakajima as the first 4 Japanese builders which will get to tear the R nineT down and rebuild it. So far we’ve only got small photos which don’t do these bikes any justice, but we’re expecting better ones from BMW.

It looks like the whole customization process, which took several months is finally over, as insella reports that the four BMW R nineT have been introduced to the public during the BBBMW Motorrad Days event which took place last weekend at the Hakuba 47 Mountain Sports Park, some 260km (160 miles) north-west of the capital Tokyo.

Funny thing, all the 4 builders went retro with the R nineT, from racey looks with ample fairings and full, lenticular wheels to extreme café-racer designs. While the beauty is obviously in the eye of the beholder, we liked the 46 café machine of Shiro Nakajima best.

Far from trying to establish a hierarchy, it looks like BMW has succeeded completely in creating a bike which allows the personality of each customizer to shine through, in the most transparent and exciting way possible. And this means a triple win, counting in the modders themselves and the customers, alike.
