Ever since the first BMW M3 was launched, back in the 1980s, with only one goal in mind (to win the DTM Championship) the world was never the same. That’s because what the M3 brought to the table was more than impressive.
A compact car with mind-boggling performances, meant for the masses with a (back then) fair price. What more could you ask for? That’s why the M3 became famous and created a true cult around it. Ask anyone and they’ll tell you that the main attributes of this car are: power, speed and handling.
Another attribute should be added to this mix though, if it was up to me: the Coupe body style. It’s true, over the years 2 models were done in Sedan guise but those can easily be called ‘anomalies’. I’m talking about the E36 M3 Sedan and the E90 models.
Whilst they did provide the thrills people were looking for, they were actually never on par with their Coupe brothers and felt a bit odd at times. That’s exactly how I’m feeling these days looking at the F82 M4 Coupe, the car that will replace the legendary M3 as we all know it, a Coupe.
I’m sure it will be a brilliant car but maybe I’m just not ready to call a BMW that is supposed to be named M3, M4. Maybe that’s just me. However, until I get a chance to drive the new Coupe from Bavaria, I got together a couple of photos of 4 BMW M3s at a local gathering in the Netherlands, to remind us all what that name meant once and will mean in the future.
