The i8 will surely be a successful product, just like its i3 brother. What does that make the i sub-brand? Well, a success in itself, with its technology shared amongst the entire BMW line-up and not just one or two models.
What’s next though? The i3 and i8 models are virtually here and we know all about them. The sales seem to be doing pretty good and the public takes a liking in them but what awaits in the future for the i brand?
Rumors said earlier this year that an i5 is planned for the near future and now we’re catching wind of another model with four doors. While the i5 is a derivative of the i3, the i9 will be the same for the i8, at least in theory.
No word has come in from BMW but we do know that they trademarked an entire range of i vehicles, ranging from i1 to i9 so we’ll surely get to see more i cars on the road.
If the i9 would come alive, it could be an i8 with four doors, a car that can accommodate four people in comfort, unlike the plug-in hybrid sportscar.
When will such a car be revealed? Hard to say. If the i9 is to come to life, it has to leave some room for the i8 to breathe. Therefore, expect 2 or 3 full years before its launch, until the current madness fades away.
Furthermore, in 2016 BMW will turn 100. A lot of rumors have been going around that they will mark this anniversary with a special car that will be either a supercar or something else. Either way it will be quite unique, to say the least.
The i9 might be one way to go. Of course, the enthusiasts are hoping for a V10 engine inside a CFRP body but that seems to be a really long shot, especially due to the ever tightening CO2 emission regulations. A more eco-friendly approach does make more sense and with the technology advancing even further we might see a worthy rival for the Model S pretty soon.
