FOTA Turn to Dorna Sports for Breakaway Series

Rumors about a potential breakaway series set by the eight teams currently part of the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) are starting to make the headlines of most European sports newspapers. Not far from yesterday, Spanish publication Diario AS revealed the possibility of FOTA turning to MotoGP promoter Dorna for the formation of a new racing series from 2010 onwards.

As reported by the aforementioned source, it seems several representatives of the FOTA have already contacted Dorna Sports' Carmelo Ezpeleta for some preliminary discussions on the potential “breakaway” series. If the FIA stand by their belief to introduce budge caps in Formula One, it's likely that the FOTA teams – at least the manufacturers that are part of the teams' body – will proceed with the discussions.

The Madrid based organization – led by Ezpeleta – is currently promoting Formula One's motorcycle counterpart, the MotoGP series. Although the company was bought by Formula One owners CVC back in 1998, its own management currently controls all of their promotional operations.

As reported by the GMM news agency, Dorna Sports “has been credited with transferring the rule-making power of the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) to the GP Manufacturers Association (MSMA).”

Another series of rumors regarding the formation of a FIA-independent championship by the Formula One teams surfaced during the past weekend's Turkish GP, as it emerged that the venues to be used for running the future races will be the ones that were part of the F1 schedule in the past. Historical tracks, such as the ones at Kyalami, Silverstone, Magny Cours and Montreal, were only a few names rumored by the media.
