FOTA to Rock Qualifying Format in 2010

The Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) seems to have held its first productive talks regarding the format of Formula One racing in 2010. One day after BMW announced its complete quit from the sport, the teams' alliance has moved to make some important changes in terms of sporting regulations for next year, aimed at improving the show.

As constantly stated by the FOTA, the new changes are a result of fans' choice worldwide, as the sport is aiming to become once again the most popular racing series in the world. The first of those changes is related to the knock-out qualifying format, which may suffer some “improvements” in 2010.

According to a report coming from the GMM news agency, it seems the new format would see only 5 Formula One cars take the track at the same time. Although we're not yet sure how the selection of those 5 cars will be made, it appears the new system will favor only the two fastest cars of the pack.

It is believed FOTA's desired change would see five cars on track at a time, with the two fastest progressing to take on the next group of competitors,” says the report from the aforementioned source.

Confusing, isn't it? Well, it's not like the FOTA have already decided on it anyway, but the idea of changing something in the qualifying format in order to make it more appealing to the fans sure sounds great. Some other ideas would be allowing each team to field a 3rd car starting 2010, although the proposal doesn't seem to have that much support within the FOTA members.
