FOTA Confirms Martin Whitmarsh as New CEO

McLaren Mercedes' team principal and CEO Martin Whitmarsh was finally confirmed by the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) as their new chairman for a full mandate. Following Ferrari's CEO Luca di Montezemolo stepping down from that position at the end of last season, it was only a question of time for the teams' alliance to name a new head.

Although rumored by the media for a while now, Whitmarsh was now officially confirmed as new CEO of the FOTA, this being only one of the new appointments that was made within the organization's management board. Here's the new structure of the FOTA, following Di Montezemolo's and Briatore's departure from the alliance.

The Executive Committee of the Formula One Teams Association elected Martin Whitmarsh as its new Chairman for the year 2010,” said the press release from the FOTA.

Stefano Domenicali will be the Vice Chairman. Completing the team which will lead FOTA in 2010, Christian Horner takes the role of Chairman of the Sporting Regulations Working Group while Ross Brawn will maintain his role of Chairman of the Technical Regulations Working Group. The activities of the Commercial Development Working Group will be directly managed by the Executive Committee.”

In addition to the official thanks issued towards former FOTA president Luca di Montezemolo, the press release also confirms that all the new teams are now part of the alliance.

Each member of the association, which now includes all Teams competing in Formula One, is entitled to appoint one representative within the Executive Committee and within each of the standing Working Groups. The different bodies work closely together in order to define FOTA’s objectives and initiatives,” added the FOTA statement.
