Former Formula One test driver Maria de Villota was found dead in a hotel room in Seville, Spain on Friday morning. Police said the 33-year-old apparently died of natural causes, but added that an autopsy will be carried out.
De Villota parted with Formula One last year, after sustaining serious injuries in a crash during testing for the Marussia F1 team in England. She lost her right eye and sustained head injuries after hitting a truck trailer.
Born in Madrid, De Villota raced in several motorsport series, including the WTCC and the Superleague Formula before joining F1 in 2011. She was the daughter of Emilio de Villota, who competed in Formula One from 1976 through 1982.
"It is with great sadness that we learned a short time ago of the news that Maria de Villota has passed away," Marussia F1 team said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Maria's family and friends at this very difficult time."
