In these times of ever-increasing environmental awareness, it was only a matter of time before somebody would get the great idea of starting a racing series which would try to be like Formula 1, but with all-electric cars. Well, now Formula E has been licensed by the FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile).
The series starts in 2014, and it is the fruit of the investment of a consortium of international investors - Formula E Holdings Ltd. The cars themselves will be able to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in three seconds, before reaching a top speed of ‘over 220 km/h’ (137 mph), though, honestly, we expect them to be a bit faster than that.

A prototype of what the 2014 race cars could look like has already been built in France, by a company called Formulec. It has a two-speed gearbox, and despite being a ultra-light weight single seater racing machine, the weight of its battery pack pushes the total figure to around 780 kg.

Currently, the biggest drawback is the fact that the battery runs out after only 25 minutes, so all drivers will be forced to use at least two cars to finish a race, which is kind of a pain, if you ask us.
