He is an retired Formula One driver who won the F1 World Championship three times, but Austrian entrepreneur Niki Lauda is rather known as the non-executive chairman of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team. The Austrian retired racer is also the founder of two low-cost airlines and reports are one of them is about to offer one of the shortest international flights on the planet.
How is that special in any way? Well, it is considering we’re talking about a 30-mile trip from Vienna, Austria to Bratislava, Slovakia that lasts about 10 minutes. Sure, it could also be a well-engineered Fool’s Day prank since the service will be launched on April 1st, but rumors are it’s not.

Is it the shortest one in the world? Not really, according to The UK Telegraph, who claims there’s a 20-mile flight between Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Brazaville, across the border in the Republic of Congo. However, the distance might be smaller, but the time to get from one point to the other takes about 30-minute, which makes it last longer than Niki’s future service.

So why would you take the plane when you can simply drive for about 50 minutes to get from Vienna to Bratislava? It would be quite useful for those who simply use it as a airport transfer. If that is the case, Niki’s new flight service might be a great business hit.

Now, the former F1 driver has had some bad luck in recent years with one of the airlines he founded, Lauda Air. Even though it was owned by Niki for most of its existence, for the final portion of its history it was a charter airline that was a subsidiary of Austrian Airlines. It ceased to exist on April 6, 2013 and was replaced by Austrian myHoliday.

As to what we were saying earlier, we don’t really believe it’s a joke Niki is pooling since people can already book flights for the flight service online for about $50 (EUR42). Either way, we sure like that some racers out there never quit and are able to always start again and succeed.
