Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. (SAIC) has just named former Nissan designer, Martin Uhlarik, as the head of its European design center, based in Longbridge, UK, at the old MG factory, now owned by SAIC. Canadian-born Uhlarik had previously oversaw the restyling of the Qashqai, in 2010, as well as the design of the NV200 concept and the 2003 Evalia concept.
SAIC has also promoted the former head of the studio, Tony Williams-Kenny, to global design director, and he has had to move to Shanghai, where the main headquarters is located. The company has big plans for the UK-based design studio, so far responsible for the MG6, MG5 and MG3, as they are planning on investing £1.5-million in order to double its size.
They are also planning on beginning sales of MG models on mainland Europe, as of next year, because currently the UK is the only European country which is getting them. According to David Lindley, Managing Director of SAIC Motor UK, said: "Expanding our design studio will enable us to work on greater numbers of projects at the same time and improve our design capabilities across SAIC Group models destined for European and Chinese markets."
