Former F1 Driver Gerhard Berger Had a Skiing Accident

Ex-Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger had a skiing accident last Thursday in Austria, just ten weeks after seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher suffered a similar – though much worse – fate while skiing with his family in the Austrian Alps.

Even though Berger's crash was less severe, he did suffer a broken arm and was airlifted by helicopter to St. Johann in Tirol, where he was treated and even operated during the weekend before being released yesterday.

The 54-year old Austrian is therefore said to have crashed rather heavily, but is currently out of danger and his life wasn't threatened like Schumacher's.

The coincidence is striking though, as both are former Formula 1 drivers and both were skiing in the Austrian Alps when luck stopped smiling at them.

Schumi, his former on-track competitor, is still in a hospital in Grenoble after he hit his head during a skiing accident at the end of last December, with his future recovery prognosis being rather slim.

Gerhard Berger is known as one of the most popular figures in 1980s and 1990s Formula 1, despite not having won a single championship during his tenure. His friendship with Ayrton Senna and his rather humorous side have led to a lot of anecdotical stories about the practical jokes that the two were pulling on each other.

After exiting Formula 1 in 1997, he returned to the sport as the Competitions Director at BMW and then as a 50 percent joint owner of the Scuderia Toro Rosso. He is currently President of the FIA Single Seat Commission.
