You know, there are people who would be very happy to plug the exhaust pipes of some (if not all) diesel cars right now, following what we've all come to know as the "dieselgate."
I guess we all agree that would be stupid, as regardless of how much Volkswagen lied, a Golf TDI will never pollute as much as a road train, for example. And we don't see anybody in any hurry to ban those. Not to mention the tractor pulling contests, where there's enough black smoke sent in the air to cover an entire city.
Well, the guy you are about to see in this video is a Belarussian mechanic, and we all know mechanics don't have a problem getting their hands dirty. It seems this fellow doesn't mind getting his face charcoal black either, as you're about to see.
We could be condescending and say this is the Belarussian method of testing NOx emissions for a car, but we won't go there. However, you have to admire their methodological approach, with the "X marks the spot" drawn on the asphalt making us think they have a pretty standardized procedure.
Then there are those pieces of cloth he's holding. At first, you have no idea what he's about to do with them. Then it all becomes obvious: he's going to plug the exhaust for a few seconds to build up the smoke and pressure. It's clear, these guys are pros.
On the other hand, remember last year when everybody was dumping buckets of ice and water over their heads? Of course you do, you must have eventually become just as annoyed with everybody doing it (even if some of them weren't even asked to) as we were. Yes, it was for charity, but you couldn't help but feel some guys were only doing it for publicity.
We really hope this doesn't catch on in the same way. The "Mouthful of diesel smoke challenge". Anyway, you heard it here first.
