When Mercedes-Benz firstly unveiled their F 015 Luxury in Motion concept at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show, everybody was impressed. The futuristic design, its performance, luxurious interior and, above all, the capacity to drive itself were truly something else. Sure, there’s nothing new in all of these features, event though they’re still under development. We did, however, stumble upon a concept that definitely stands as a mind-bending idea and it’s not even a car.
Mercedes-Benz sees a world where autonomous vehicles such as the F 015 Luxury in Motion concept become daily commuters. Sure, they say this car is going to be regular in 2030, not now. They are currently using it as a testing lab freak, and it even was spotted on public roads a couple of times.

The futuristic ride is fitted with LED arrays both in front and the back that emit blue or white light if it’s being driven by a human or by itself accordingly. The wheels turn thanks to a hydrogen fuel-cell or a plug-in rechargeable batteries. The electric motor produces around 268 horsepower and 294 lb-ft (398 Nm) of torque.

Sure, we have been talking about this puppy on several occasions in the near past. It’s not Mercedes’ futuristic, self-driving car that concerns us today, but, in fact, an autonomous underwater craft.

Meet the Mercedes-Benz H2O concept, a vehicle its creator defines as a “symbiosis of science and ecotourism”. The watercraft takes the shape of a bullet and for some reason wears the German automaker’s trademark on the side.

But what is it? Well, it’s the means of exploring the ocean of the future and was created by designer Markus Krautter to back up his Master thesis project for Pforzheim University’s transportation design program.

In our modern times, it is increasingly necessary to take care of natural treasures, which are a fundamental part of our existence,” Krautter explains, according to Form Trends. Apparently, the Mercedes-Benz AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle) applies high-tech standards in propulsion, communication, and interface.

The peculiar shape allows the craft to cut through deep sea water while the interior keeps things as smooth and luxurious as possible. The designer believes this watercraft could one day serve two purposes, both that of underwater exploration and ecotourism.
