What, you thought placing a GoPro camera on the tire of a moving car is as far as this filming devices can get? Think again. 21st century footage won’t stop in the air, on ground, nor on water. Australia-based company Strike Cam have designed the Underwater Fishing Camera, a device to be attached to your line that will go down up to 30 feet to record the fish bite.
Nick Woodman’s GoPro cameras went a long way from being just a dream of a surfer who wanted to capture quality action photos of himself conquering the waves. His desire and idea of a camera system that could capture the professional angles inspired the GoPro name, but back in 2002, Woodman wouldn’t afford designing them. In fact, the ex-surfer initially raised money for his company by selling bead and shell belts out of his VW van. While making the belts, he came upon the idea of providing a fashionable strap to attach a camera.

Two years later, his company sold the first camera system - a 35 mm film version. Soon enough the camera evolved from film to digital and later on to switch to its current configuration of fixed-lens HD video cameras with a wide 170-degree angle. This June, the company raised $427 million on its first day as a publicly traded company. At the initial public offering (IPO) price the company is valued at $2,95 billion.

We don’t even need figures to appreciate how far the GoPro cameras went from being just a normal filming device. They are known for being compact, lightweight, rugged, wearable or mountable in unusual places such as drones, planes, cars boats, bicycles and motorcycle helmets or even army tanks. But the story does not quite end here.

In our long walks to the endless maze of internet, we’ve stumbled upon a new duty assigned to GoPro Cameras. Filming the moment when a fish bites, might not be as adventurous as tapping a parachute jump or a crazy drift on Transfagarasan road, but for some people it might just be the next thing. The Strike Cam is designed to be attached directly to you line, going down up to 30 feet in order to record every bite in smooth 480p video.

And according to its creators, the fishing camera also helps enthusiasts understand better what they’re doing. “While certainly entertaining, our Strike Cam technology has also been quite instructional. How fish react to lures, how they position themselves to structure, the dynamics of schooling fish, the hookset, the fight... all seen first-hand,” the device is described on their website.
