Ford’s New 6.8L V8 Rumored to Replace 6.2L V8 in the 2023 Ford Super Duty

Two years ago, Unifor announced that Ford is going to build a brand-new engine in Windsor. Opened in 1923, the Canadian plant currently produces the 7.3-liter pushrod V8 used by the Super Duty. Following that announcement, Unifor boss Jerry Dias let it slip that Windsor is gearing up for a 6.8-liter V8 that would be used in the F-150 and Mustang.

A press release that has been curiously deleted by Unifor from their website notes that $148 million are going to the powertrain facilities in Windsor. The union further refers to this brand-new engine as the 6.X L, which led many to speculate that it’s related to the 7.3 engine mentioned just earlier.

There is, however, a problem with this hearsay because the F-150 and Mustang are both available with the 5.0-liter Coyote that flaunts a DOHC valvetrain. Going back to a cam-in-block design isn’t particularly smart, but on the other hand, look at how many pushrod V8s both General Motors and Fiat Chrysler currently sell in their half-ton trucks and pony/muscle cars.

Our friends at Ford Authority have it on good authority (pun intended) that FoMoCo intends to introduce this engine in the 2023 Ford Super Duty line of workhorses. They don’t mention the half-ton pickup or the pony car at all, but they do have a point in regard to why the 6.8-liter V8 is necessary for this application. Obviously enough, it would replace the 6.2-liter Boss.

The Boss features good ol’ cast iron for the block and lightweight aluminum for the cylinder heads and pistons. In the Super Duty, the Boss currently produces 385 horsepower at 5,750 revolutions per minute and 430 pound-foot (583 Nm) at 3,800 revolutions per minute. By comparison, the L8T small block in the Chevy Silverado HD cranks out 401 hp at 5,200 rpm and 464 lb-ft (629 Nm) at 4,000 rpm. As for the 6.4-liter HEMI in the Ram HD, make that 410 hp at 5,600 rpm and 429 lb-ft (582 Nm) at 4,000 rpm.

Considering that the 7.3-liter Godzilla replaces the 6.8-liter Triton V10 from the Modular engine family, the 6.8-liter “Minizilla” would make plenty of sense as the successor of the 6.2-liter Boss in Ford’s heavy-duty pickups. As for the F-150 and Mustang, only time will tell if they’ll get this mill.
