We all know that 2020 will go down in history as an unprecedented year, and many businesses will need a lot of time to recover from all its adverse effects. Still, some things didn’t change across the automotive industry, such as Ford capturing first place in commercial vehicle sales in Europe.
The Blue Oval has grown accustomed to harboring more and more sales trophies - at home in the United States the F-Series has reached its 44th consecutive year of pickup market leadership, while the UK market saw the little Fiesta and the Transit Custom/Tourneo Custom siblings become the first and second most popular vehicles overall.

Now it’s time to find out what happened on the Old Continent; by the way, the UK is now being counted outside of Europe by its own will, given the Brexit. The company has a raft of good news to fend off the interference of the global health crisis and has prepared a PDF document with all the important elements.

As per tradition, we embedded the doc a bit further down below, but we also need to highlight some of the more interesting facts and upcoming developments. First up, total sales for the Ford brand (across its 20 European markets it traditionally reports deliveries upon) were of almost one million vehicles - 974,982 units, to be exact, which is a big 26.8 percent drop compared to 2019.

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association hasn’t revealed its full 2020 outcome, but in November 2020, the European Union’s new car registrations totaled around nine million units – a contraction of 25.5% when compared to the same period in 2019.

The good news for the Blue Oval is that it managed to capture the leadership of the commercial vehicle sector for the sixth year in a row (56th in the UK!), with an “all-time full year CV market share record in the European 20 markets of 14.6 per cent” (+0.7%) and the Ranger again being king of the pickup truck segment.

For 2021, Ford is banking on its SUVs to make an impact. “Our commercial vehicle strategy continues to flourish... Puma and Kuga are leading the charge on our SUV growth, and now our electrification plan is accelerating with the launch of the award-winning Mustang Mach-E that combines emotion with advanced all-electric technology,” explains Roelant de Waard, Vice President - Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe.
