If you like fast cars, big attitudes, no-holds-barred racing, and a bit of a backstory, Ford v Ferrari is the movie to watch on November 15th. The second preview of the biographical drama from James Mangold turns the exciting factor all the way up to eleven, and we’re pleased this kind of movie still exists in the day and age where SUVs and trucks outsell pretty much everything else.
Instead of a spoiler alert, we should highlight that this film couldn’t have been made if Enzo Ferrari wouldn’t have stepped out of a deal to sell the Prancing Horse of Maranello to the Ford Motor Company. Henry was so livid about the whole shenanigan that he told his engineers to beat Ferrari at Le Mans.
And thus, the people who worked on the Shelby Cobra and Daytona were put to work on the GT40 project. Henry Ford II made the call to create the mid-engine sports car in 1963 right after the deal fell through, but the first overall win at Le Mans had to wait until 1966. By 1969, the Blue Oval had four consecutive wins and a lot of satisfaction from beating Ferrari so many times.
It’s easy to think that Henry and his people had it easy with the GT40 program, but the second trailer for Ford v Ferrari proves that blood, sweat, and tears were needed to produce these results. The relationship between Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles is the centerpoint of the movie, a love-hate affair re-enacted by two Hollywood superstars: Matt Damon and Christian Bale.
So far, we know that the cast also includes Jon Bernthal as Lee Iacocca, Remo Girone as Enzo Ferrari, and Benjamin Rigby as Bruce McLaren. The man behind McLaren won the 1966 edition of Le Mans in the GT40 with co-driver Chris Amon, two motorsports legends originating from New Zealand.
By the numbers, Ford v Ferrari is understood to have benefitted from a production budget of $97,600,000 for a running time of 152 minutes. Chernin Entertainment and 20th Century Fox are the production companies while Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures handles distribution all across the world.
If you want to get very hyped up, you’ll like to hear that Ford v Ferrari has an approval rating of 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on 43 reviews at the time of writing. November 15th can’t come soon enough…
