“Amazing” is the only word that came to mind when we found out about the Blue Oval’s latest Formula Ford race car.
Getting straight to the point, it’s powered by a 1.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged three-cylinder engine that puts out a scarcely believable 205 PS. That’s about twice what it offers in the least powerful application for rad cars.
With all that power and very little weight, the Formula Ford race car is very fast, boasting an nofficial top speed of 255.5 km/h (158.8 mph) and a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of less than 4 seconds.
While not a production car for the street, the fact that the engine in a Ford Fiesta can set blistering times round the Nurburgring is also amazing. With a time of 7:22, it would place as the 11th fastest car, faster even than the Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari Enzo and Pagani Zonda.
“This little engine has people rubbing their eyes in disbelief,” said racing driver and course specialist Nick Tandy, 28, who completed the drive. “It’s simply astonishing that a 3-cylinder, one-litre engine can deliver that kind of performance.”
