Ford Transit Hybrid Versions to be Unveiled in Germany

On September 20, one of the biggest auto events dedicated to commercial vehicles kicks off in Hannover, Germany. There, Ford will be unveiling two new versions of its Transit workhorse.

The new Transit will be going the electrification way with the addition of both a mild and a plug-in hybrid to the range.

The first new commercial vehicle announced by Ford is the 2-ton Transit that from later in the year will be getting a 48-volt mHEV technology paired to a manual transmission. The carmaker did not detail the fuel saving the new power plant will be capable of with the new tech.

The Transit Custom on the other hand targets a zero-emission range of up to 31 miles thanks to the plug-in system. The engine on the model is a 1.0-liter EcoBoost gasoline, that acts as a range extender for the onboard batteries.

The Custom comes with a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack located under the load floor, capable of giving the van, in combination with the combustion engine, a total range of 300 miles.

Both the two models will come equipped with the Ford Telematics suite, which will provide assistance for fleet operators to improve vehicle use, vehicle availability, optimize running cost and manage drivers.

“Hannover will mark the arrival of an exciting new family of Transit commercial vehicles that are ‘born connected’,” said in a statement Hans Schep, general manager, Commercial Vehicles, Ford of Europe.

“Advanced connectivity, and our game-changing electrified vehicles will create extensive new opportunities to create value for our customers.”

Aside for the two new vans, Ford will also be showing at the Hannover event the Ford Ranger Raptor first presented last month at Gamescom.

The Ford Performance-tweaked pickup truck will go on sale by the middle of next year, equipped with the bi-turbo 2.0liter EcoBlue diesel engine, capable of delivering 213 ps and 500 Nm of torque.
