Ford has just announced that the first Transit Connect Taxi was delivered to Boston Cab Company at the New England International Auto Show, with more units scheduled to be delivered to several other New England taxi companies.
Each model has been equipped by Creative Mobile Technologies from Long Island City, New York, with features for payment processing and passenger information systems, including an 8.4-inch electronic infotainment and navigation screen that shows cab fares, news, weather, sports scores and stock ticker, as Ford said in a statement.
“Transit Connect Taxi offers important features for our passengers and our drivers,” said Brett Barenholtz, CEO of Boston Cab Dispatch, at the auto show. “It has more legroom and cargo space, better fuel efficiency, and makes the entire operation more economical.”
“We’ve always driven Ford vehicles, Crown Vics and Escape Hybrids” said George Summers, president of USA Taxi, who also added a Transit Connect taxi to his fleet in Boston. “Now, we’re adding the Transit Connect Taxi. It has great dimensions and fuel efficiency that will work well on the road.”
The agreement between the Boston taxi company and Ford was signed in April 2010 when it was selected from several other models because it was "the closest thing on a purpose-built vehicle for taxi use".
The car is powered by a 2.0l engine, paired with an automatic transmission. The unit comes with prep packages for a possible conversion to compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied propane gas (LPG).
