The legendary “Mach 1” name is set to return with the sixth-generation Mustang, Ford Authority reports, adding that the Blue Oval is in the final stages of acquiring the trademark for the iconic nameplate.
Our source says the “Mach 1” term has been filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office over a year ago, with current status at “First Extension - Granted”, which means Ford requested a delay for its Statement of Use.
There’s no word on when the new Mustang Mach 1 will arrive or what kind of performance it will boast, but Ford Authority speculates that this classic nameplate could replace the range-topping Shelby GT500 name, as Shelby American won’t be involved in the development of the next-generation pony.
The Mustang Mach 1 was introduced in 1969 as a V8-exclusive performance model until 1974, when it became an appearance package on the downsized Mustang II. The Mach 1 returned on the fourth-generation Mustang, being offered for the 2003-2004 model years.
