The Shanghai Auto Show is for the car makers attending more than a venue where they can present current and future models. As with any other similar auto shows, the event is a place where new dreams, bold ideas and some would say daring plans for the future are presented just as flamboyant as the models themselves.
GM already announced that it would literally flood the Chinese market with new models in the next five years. Having a reputation to defend, Ford presented today its own plan, one that, despite being smaller in scale to the one GM has, is of particular importance for the Blue Oval.
Ford said that by the middle of the decade, the roads in China will be filled with an extra 15 new or revised models, some of which will even be manufactured locally.
Starting with the 2011 Mondeo, the first Ford model that features an EcoBoost engine in China, and ending with the future generation Kuga, which will be built in China, the future range of models has only one goal: increase the car maker's market share.
“We are proud and delighted today to announce our accelerated expansion plan for China that will see 15 all-new One Ford vehicles launched here by 2015,” said Joe Hinrichs, president, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa.
“This plan reinforces our commitment to offer a full range of vehicles to new car buyers in China, the world’s biggest and most exciting auto market. The new nameplates will significantly strengthen Ford’s penetration in existing segments and drive new growth in others.”
