Ford Motor Co. has announced plans to introduce its stop-start feature on all of its major volume vehicles in order to become a leading automaker in fuel economy.
“We’re going to be aggressive rolling it out,” said Raj Nair, Ford’s global product development chief, at the Los Angeles Auto Show, adding that expanding the fuel saving feature on its current car and light truck models won’t be “a major tear-up to do it”.
Ford launched its own stop-start system on the 2013 Ford Fusion. The feature can be had as a $295 option on sedans fitted with the company’s 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine. The second vehicle to be fitted with stop-start is the next-generation Edge, which was previewed as an almost production-ready concept earlier this month.
Ford says stop-start can save customers about $1,100 in fuel costs over five years.
