The new network, which will be available only to employees at first, will expand to more than 60 Ford facilities across the United States and Canada.

“Ford’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond our fuel-efficient vehicles to include our daily workplace,” said Mike Tinskey, Ford director of vehicle electrification and infrastructure. “We know that a growing electrified vehicle infrastructure is key to making plug-in vehicles a viable option for more consumers. Ford is committed to doing its part to help develop that infrastructure.”

Ford’s GE WattStations will be installed around offices, product development campuses and manufacturing facilities throughout 2014. The charging service will be free to Ford employees for the first four hours of charging each day, the company revealed.

To collect driving and charging data that will help expand the network even more, Ford is asking employees to use the MyFord mobile smartphone app when using the GE WattStation.

Ford’s current electric/hybrid vehicle lineup in the United States includes the Focus Electric, C-MAX Energi and Fusion Energi plug-in hybrids and the C-MAX and Fusion hybrids.

Today there are more than 20,000 public charging stations in North America, nearly seven times more compared to 2009.
