Ford to Increase Production by 13% in the US

With all of the Detroit big three automakers reporting double digit gains in sales last month, it looks like the days of bankruptcy and government intervention might be behind us. Adding to the slew of good news, Ford announced on Sunday that it will increase factory production by 13 percent in the first quarter of the year.

The move could be attributed to the increase in demand for both Ford brand and Lincoln-produced cars and trucks. Company executives even stated they expect further increases in production throughout the year.

"We're trying to catch up to just the customer demand," Jim Farley, Ford's global marketing chief, told reporters at the National Automobile Dealers Association conference in San Francisco.

Sales to individual customers increased a massive 27 percent in January from the same month of last year, showing demand for American-built cars and trucks sporting the blue oval badge are on a steady rise.

In order to keep up with demand, US sales chief Ken Czubay is reportedly considering adding more jobs and a third production shift to the plants that are now running on two shifts and working overtime. According to Yahoo news, demand for vehicles like the Explorer has been so high that dealers now have "single-digit" days' supply on lots.

Ford has plans to hire aver 7,000 workers and engineers in the next two years, but even those might prove to be insufficient, as those jobs will be directed to production of the revamped Ford Escape mid-size SUV.
