Ford to Export Figo in 50 Countries

As the automotive world has already gotten used to China as being a force to be reckoned with in the industry, some manufacturers are already turning their attention to new emerging markets like India.

American carmaker Ford is among the first to sketch a mid-term strategy for the Indian market. In a statement released today, Ford announced it plans to roll out no less than eight new vehicles in India by 2015.

The decision is fueled by the 17 percent annual increase recorded by Ford on a market where it is not at all that present. The launch and subsequent success of the locally produced Figo model has been the last drop, the one which let Ford know it's time to make big plans for India.

As a result of the huge local success, Ford has decided to up the ante on the Figo model and export it to no less than 50 countries, including Mexico, North African countries and the United Arab Emirates

Ford also plans to build cars in India and export vehicles in Australia, China, India, Thailand and South Africa, a region which in the upcoming eight years is expected to grow to 35 million units, more than double the numbers registered in 2009. In the next decade, this region is expected to account for 70 percent of the company’s global growth.

“Although the vast majority of vehicles we produce in India will help satisfy growing local demand, we also continue to pursue export opportunities,” said Michael Boneham, president and managing director at Ford India.

“We are pleased to announce that Ford India will export our locally-produced, hot-selling Ford Figo to 50 new markets, including Mexico, North Africa and the Middle East starting next year.”

Details of the upcoming models have not yet been announced.
