Although it said it would expand its current lineup with four more SUVs in a few years’ time, Ford didn’t state directly what vehicles it would introduce, nor defined what a “few years” means.
The American carmaker’s current SUV lineup includes the Edge, Escape, Explorer and Expedition. Lincoln comes with the MKC, MKX, MKT and Navigator.
According to Joe Hinrichs, Ford President of the Americas, “We study a lot of things. SUVs are hot, no question about it. We have a strong brand for SUVs and a strong customer base. Opportunities for SUVs are important to us.”
Sport Utility Vehicles are very popular in the States, and customers are choosing them mostly thanks to lower gas prices. The Dearborn automaker revealed that one in three cars sold on the U.S. market today are SUVs, and in just four years, 40 percent of the U.S. auto market will be occupied by this segment.
Ford sold no less than 65,675 SUVs in December 2015, 13 percent more compared to the last month of 2014. Edge sales rose 29 percent, those of Escape went up 9 percent, and Explorer sales increased 14 percent. The Lincoln MKC also registered a growth, of no less than 88 percent, with only MKX and MKT sales tumbling.
Knowing that the American carmaker sells the subcompact EcoSport in Europe and former CEO Alan Mulally previously stated that Ford would eventually bring the model to the US, one of Ford’s next options could be a subcompact SUV, as Detroit News reports.
One of the automaker’s plans is to revive the Bronco SUV after talking with United Auto Workers last year and hoping to bring the Bronco to be built at the Michigan Assembly Plant.
Lincoln officials have also stated that the brand is set to introduce two more new vehicles to its luxury lineup by the end of the decade.
Until then, some long-awaited Ford models are expected to go into production, including the F-150 Raptor and the new Fusion, the latter having been unveiled at the 2016 North American International Auto Show.
