Ford’s brand new 2015 F-150 pickup truck won’t be the only Blue Oval-badged vehicle to feature an alloy aluminum body, company executive chairman Bill Ford revealed earlier this week.
Speaking after a press conference at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, Ford said there’s “absolutely no reason why we couldn’t think about taking it elsewhere”, but declined to name which vehicles might be next in line for its military grade aluminum alloy.
However, the upcoming new CAFE standards is likely to push Ford to use the new technology across its SUV and crossover lineup, which would benefit the most from a lighter body.
700 pounds lighter that the current version, the 2015 F-150 is expected to deliver class-leading MPGs, especially when fitted with the brand new 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine.
The redesigned F-150 was unveiled earlier this month and it’s now being showcased at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.
