With less than a month left until the Ford Mustang celebrates its 50th anniversary, the Blue Oval has announced it will display a 2015 Mustang convertible atop the Empire State Building in New York, just like it did with the first-generation pony half a century ago.
The vehicle will be showcased on the building’s observation deck on the 86th floor on April 16 and 17. The 2015 Mustang will spend 54 hours on the Empire State Building and getting it up there will take more than just a couple of hours.

Since no portable crane can reach the 86th floor and lifting it by helicopter is impossible due to the observatory’s narrow deck, the musclecar will be disassembled, packed in smaller boxes, and carried all the way up in the building’s elevator.

Once the Mustang is transported atop the structure, company technicians will have less than six hours to put it back together.

“New York is one of the greatest cities in the world, and it’s the place where the Ford Mustang story began 50 years ago,” said Mark Fields, Ford chief operating officer. “We’re thrilled to be visiting the architectural landmark that has been the heart of the Manhattan skyline for 83 years with the newest generation of the car that is the soul of Ford Motor Company.”

Both the 2015 Ford Mustang convertible and fastback will arrive in global dealerships in the fourth quarter of the year.
