Ford Teams Go for Global Green Challenge

Important efforts are carried out by each car manufacturer in order to decrease fuel consumption. This is a rule that applies to everyone, whether they’re building small city cars or powerful highway beasts, as regulations get tighter and clients get more demanding.

In an effort for the green cause as well as from a desire for attention, three entrants to the Global Green Challenge from Darwin to Adelaide joined together in the blistering Northern Territory to celebrate their common relationship before hitting the road on Sunday.

The Ford ECOnetic team and the Falcon XR6T team will head off on the economy run at 12:30 on Saturday, while the Ford-supported University of Michigan Solar Car team leaves on Sunday. They are expecting very good fuel economy from the two production cars and expecting the solar car to win the race.

Achieving only 3.7L/100km, the Fiesta ECOnetic is Australia's most fuel efficient car, so we expect it to seriously challenge for the outright title of lowest fuel economy in this event. Our Falcon XR6T is our sleeper entrant though – the overall winner will be determined by which team achieves the greatest improvement over their official ADR fuel economy number - and we're set to surprise a few people with just how good the fuel economy is on our Falcon. We'll be proving that you really CAN have your cake and eat it too – hugely enjoyable performance, combined with outstanding fuel economy,” said Ford officials.

The Solar Car team will be forced to endure the heat unlike what they’re used to at home. The Global Green Challenge will cover more than 3,000 km, from Darwin to Adelaide to showcase current and future technologies that are designed to improve fuel economy. Ford is counting on a Fiesta ECOnetic (diesel) and a Falcon XR6T in this event.
