Ford Takes Smart Cars on California Tour

Ever wondered how a car that can multiply Wi-Fi and GPS and instantly get into a conversation with another of its kind looks like? Well, here's your chance to answer that question, provided that you live in the areas in which Ford plans to bring its intelligent cars in a show of might and awe. Thing is, you probably won't be swept off your feet, as these cars look like any other.

Ford has been working for quite some time on various systems that would allow cars to talk to one another, so that can avoid those nasty moments when two of them try to occupy the same space at the same time. Now, the car maker has decided it has something to show the world, so it will be taking a small fleet of smart cars on a tour of California’s biggest markets.

Starting with the presentation which took place on Wednesday at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and continuing with the similar event on June 1 in San Francisco, Ford tries to explain to all that might listen that it has found the best way to make its cars talk the same language.

More precisely, Ford says that the systems it has been working on can help reduce crashes (by as much as 81 percent of all police-reported light-vehicle crashes involving unimpaired drivers) and traffic congestion.

“Intelligent vehicles are the next frontier of collision avoidance innovations that could revolutionize the driving experience and hold the potential of helping reduce many crashes,” said Sue Cischke, group vice president, Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering.
