The Christmas holidays may be almost upon us, but that doesn’t mean people stray too far away from their favorite places. And, whenever said locale includes two stretches of straight tarmac and a couple of electronic boards, you can bet we’re interested.
On today’s episode of look what the Internet brought us from the drag strip – in this particular case the Drag Racing and Car Stuff channel on YouTube – we have what appears to be a second-generation (1999-2004) Ford SVT Lightning going for some quarter-mile glory against a rather eclectic mix.
During the first race for the Lightning, it faces off against a very modern Mustang (of the EcoBoost variety, if we are to trust the video’s description). It’s an interesting pairing, as the truck is older and heavier, but we gave it the benefit of the doubt since we had no idea if the supercharged 5.4-liter Triton V8 was modified or not.
Given that Ford’s sixth-generation pony easily snatched the victory during both encounters - the Lightning probably called for a rematch on account of its poor start during the first race – we can safely assume that both were in (or close to) stock form.
That would explain the results (the times and trap speeds are in the gallery above, even though the video’s quality isn’t great). Although the supercharged Lightning (360 or 380 horsepower in stock form, depending on the model year) is more powerful than a four-pot Mustang, the weight advantage has the latter coming with the upper hand and better time.
Still, the special F-150 did come out with a victory that evening, facing a Chevrolet Silverado Z71 in between the two Mustang runs. This time around, the modern representative of the truck segment didn’t come on top the older, but feistier Lightning – although it wasn’t too far away, either.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell (there's no background information) if this was stock or modified, either. We did notice the Silverado moving very well, dipping into the low 14-second range, and almost hitting 98 mph (158 kph). Still, that was not enough for the victory, as the Lightning was even better, with a result of 13.46 seconds at 100.35 mph (161 kph).
