At an undisclosed date and place, a Ford Super Duty was involved in a car crash and caught fire due to the unwanted mix between sparks and the truck’s carpet flooring. As a result, the Blue Oval has decided to recall over half a million pickups in North America.
Ford says it is aware of this single incident, but to be on the safe side, 490,574 vehicles in the U.S. and federal territories, 56,112 in Canada, and 852 in Mexico are being recalled to have the carpet and carpet insulation covered with foil tape, and the sound deadener on the backside of the B-pillar trim panel modified.

“As needed, dealers will apply foil tape to the carpet and carpet insulation and modify the sound deadener on the backside of the B-pillar trim panel. The Ford reference number for this recall is 19S52,” Ford stated.

The recall involves only cars manufactured at the Kentucky Truck Plant from October 8, 2015, to October 29, 2019.

The carmaker says in these cars the excessive sparks generated by a front seat belt pretensioner that deploys during a crash could ignite the carpet or carpet insulation in the area of the B-pillar. From there, the fire could easily spread elsewhere and engulf the car.

This latest recall is the latest in a long series for Ford this year. In all, millions of cars branded with the Blue Oval, including the newer models Explorer and Aviator, have been recalled for various issues.

The Super Duty itself is currently subject to another recall, one that has to do with a tailgate problem. A quarter of a million of them, made between 2017 and 2019, may be fitted with an electric tailgate latch-release switch that can short-circuit because of water infiltration.

To fix the issues, dealers will modify the wiring harnesses in the tailgate frame by adding jumper pigtails.
