We know a lot of you folks out there love the Mustang and we're certain most people do agree that Ford's pony is one of the most important musclecars ever created.
However, we have a feeling that not everyone knows that the familiar 1964 Mustang was actually preceded by a concept car that, while wearing the same name, was totally different that what the production vehicle would turn out to be.
Show to the public at Watkins Glen in 1962, the Mustang 1 Concept sported an avant-garde wedge shape design and looked more like a vehicle that was created to take on the American race tracks. The two-seater barchetta-like study was powered by a tiny 1.5-liter V4 engine and hidden headlamps.
All told, only the name, the galloping horse badge and the front turn signals made it on the production Ford Mustang which became a legendary automobile starting 1964. Despite remaining just a prototype, the Mustang 1 Concept survived to this day and Ford decided to showcase it as part of the pony's 50th anniversary. Just scroll below to have a look at the video.
