Three years after it was introduced, the increasingly popular 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 is now the best-selling engine in the lineup that powers the F-150 pickup.
Marking a major milestone with the sale of its 500,000th EcoBoost-equipped F-150, Ford boasts that truck owners that opted for this engine have saved more than 56.8 million gallons of fuel on an annual basis in the past 38 months.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, that equals to 6,685 tanker trucks' worth of gasoline, the annual greenhouse gas impact of 413,895 acres of forests, 70,000 homes going without electricity for a full year or installing 139 wind turbines.

Corporate blah blah aside, the fact is that F-150 customers are steadily ditching the thirsty V8s in favor of the more frugal V6 mills. Over the last three years, the entire segment of light-duty pickups equipped with V6 powerplants grew more than 600 percent, with the F-150 directly responsible for 91 percent of that growth.

Reversing 47 years of V8 dominance in the industry, more than 45 percent of current Ford F-150s are sold with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost mill. "We expect those numbers to hold for the rest of the year,” said Doug Scott, Ford truck group marketing manager. “It really is amazing when you consider we are doing that with just two V6 engine choices – the 3.5-liter EcoBoost and the 3.7-liter Ti-VCT engine. When we come out with the new 2015 F-150, we will offer three different V6 engines, so there is potential for further growth.”

The 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost unit delivers 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft (570 Nm) of torque, enough resources to enable a best-in-class towing capacity of 11,300 pounds. Along with the 3.7-liter Ti-VCT and 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engines, the all-new 2015 Ford F-150 will offer a new 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine with standard Auto Start-Stop, built in Lima, Ohio.
