Ford Sales Steady in May

American manufacturer Ford announced today its sales figures for the month of May in the US, saying that it sold 192,102 units on the local market, a number that is equal to the one posted a year ago. At the same time, year-to-date sales reached 878,600 vehicles, the equivalent of an increase of 12 percent.

The best-selling models in the Ford lineup remained the same as always. Combined, the Fiesta and the new Focus managed to score for the car maker the biggest small car month since May 2008, with 29,423 leaving the dealership's lots. At the same time, the new Explorer managed to rise to new heights, posting the best sales month in almost four years: 13,318 vehicles, or an increase of 135 percent versus a year ago.

“Customers increasingly are demanding new products that deliver compelling fuel economy,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, US Marketing, Sales and Service. “Ford’s new fuel-efficient products and powertrains arrived at the right time – just as fuel efficiency became even more of a consideration among consumers.”

As a result of the sales performance in the months that have passed, Ford announced plans to update its sales target for the third quarter of the year. With now five months of sales data recorded, the car maker is saying it plans to manufacture 630,000 vehicles in its North America, a hefty increase of eight percent compared to the same period of last year.

For Q2, the production plans calls for the manufacturing of 710,000 vehicles, a number that remains unchanged from the previous production update.
