Ford's Electrifying Plans for Europe

Taking advantage of its presence at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, American manufacturer Ford outlined its plan when it comes to the future line-up of electric and hybrid vehicles to be brought to the Old Continent. According to the plan, a total of five full electric or hybrid vehicles from the C, CD and light commercial vehicle classes, will be released by no later than 2013.

"We recognise that one technology does not work for all our customers," Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of Global Product Development said at the event.

"Our electrification strategy and plans include hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles to best meet our global customers' needs.  Leveraging our global platforms is also central to this strategy and allows us to build on our strong product line-up in the most customer-driven, affordable way."

Simply put, Ford will release in Europe the Transit Connect Electric (2011) and Ford Focus Electric (2012). Three other models, two next-generation petrol hybrid-electric vehicles and a plug-in hybrid, will arrive by 2013.

The Ford Transit Connect Electric goes on sales in North America later this year, while the Focus Electric, based on the next generation Focus, will be introduced in North America in 2011.

"Thanks to the global economies of scale afforded to us by our ONE Ford initiative, I am delighted we are able to make the commitment now to deliver these models to customers in Europe, particularly as the demand for hybrid vehicles grows," John Fleming, Ford of Europe CEO said.
