The highly successful range of pickup trucks sold by Ford as the F-Series is about to get even more exciting. The carmaker announced the specs for the brand new engine, one that brings “best-in-class gas V8 output and best-in-class gas torque.”
The announcement about the engine was made at the beginning of the year, but now Ford talks for the first time about the performance figures. The new 7.3-liter engine that develops 430 horsepower and 475 ft.-lb. of torque, which for a gasoline engine in this class are the best on the market.
The engine works in conjunction with a brand new transmission as well, a 10-speed heavy-duty TorqShift. For now, Ford did not reveal the numbers that could shed some light on the towing and payload ratings, but said it would do so soon.
The new engine will debut soon on the Super Duty F-250 and F-350 pickup models, joining a range that already comprises the 6.2-liter V8 gasoline and 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8. This latter engine will be upgraded too, and the new performance figures will be announced at a later date.
After its debut, the 7.3-liter will be offered as standard on the F-550, F-600, F-650, F-750, and F-53 and F-59 stripped chassis. As an option, it will be available on the 2020 F-Series Super Duty pickup.
Separately, a less powerful variant of the unit rated at 350 horsepower and 468 lb.-ft. of torque will make its way on all of the above models, but also the F-450 chassis cab and E-Series.
“The 7.3-liter is designed for maximum durability in the harshest environments given that our customers live and work in these conditions every day,” said in a statement Joel Beltramo, Ford manager for gasoline V8 engines.
“This engine has the largest displacement in its class and is designed to provide benefits in key areas like power, durability, ease of maintenance and total operating costs.”
