Ford Reveals Focus Active Wagon, Refers To It As “Crossover”

We were scratching our heads when Ford came out with the Focus Active, nothing more than a jacked-up hatchback labeled “crossover” because the Blue Oval thinks the buzzword is enough to make those sales happen. But the ridiculousness goes one step further with the Focus Active Wagon, which is also referred to as “crossover” by the Dearborn-based automaker.

Hey Ford, did you know Audi calls the A6 Allroad an allroader? Not even Volvo had the audacity to call the V60 Cross Country a crossover, which is saying something about how insecure Ford feels about the Focus Active. To make matters worse, the Blue Oval won’t bring the Focus Active to the United States because of the ongoing tariff wars with China.

Turning our attention back to the Old Continent, Ford claims is selling more utility vehicles than ever before in this part of the world. “The all-new Focus Active does more than just look the part – its bespoke chassis and new Selectable Drive Mode options deliver genuine rough-road capability for families who want to explore off the beaten track,” said Roelant de Waard, vice-president of marketing, sales, and service at Ford of Europe.

For the longroof body style, the engine lineup consists of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost, 1.5-liter EcoBoost, 1.5-liter EcoBlue, and 2.0-liter EcoBlue. It should be mentioned that the 1.5-liter EcoBoost in the Focus Active is the three-cylinder turbo we’ve tested in the hatchback, and it does the job in combination with the six-speed manual.

The 1.5-liter EcoBlue with the eight-speed automatic transmission is surprisingly good too, although a bit on the noisy side of turbo diesel engines. If you were wondering, Ford didn’t even bother to come up with an all-wheel-drive system for the Focus Active despite the fact the C2 platform will be shared with the all-new Kuga. You know, the compact crossover that goes by the name of Escape in the United States.

Compared to the Focus hatchback, the Active has 30 millimeters more ride height up front and 34 millimeters more at the rear. The suspension geometry is unique to this model, set up to complement the 215/55 tires wrapped around 17-inch alloy wheels. Customers can also choose 215/50 tires and 18-inch alloy wheels as an optional extra.
