An announcement from Dearborn, Michigan, is telling that the Blue Oval has issued two safety compliance recalls in North America. Totaling 203,500 crossover SUVs and light commercial vehicles, the Ford Motor Company is adamant that no crashes or injuries have been attributed to the manufacturing faults responsible for the recall campaigns.
The first of two safety compliance recalls covers 203,445 vehicles from the 2014 and 2015 models years. Affected nameplates include the Escape crossover (cars built at Louisville Assembly Plant from May 19th, 2014 to February 6th, 2015) and Transit Connect (built at the Valencia Plant in Spain from May 13th, 2014 to December 10, 2014).

In a nutshell, there’s a compliance issue with the FMVSS 101 and a few other NHTSA Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The issue, according to Ford, is an electronic gremlin. When starting the car, the warning lights, chimes, messages, and instrument cluster may not work properly. Some 182,520 units from the affected vehicle tally were sold in the United States of America, 18,226 in Canada, and 2,699 Escape and Transit Connect vehicles in Mexico.

The second recall campaign covers only 49 examples of the 2015 model year Ford Transit commercial vehicle. In essence, there’s a safety belt labeling issue. FoMoCo is incoming that these Transits “have a special-order front passenger seat belt that works properly, but was mislabeled by the supplier and does not contain information required by FMVSS 209 regarding seat belts.”

It sounds like overkill, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is pretty serious about this kind of manufacturing error. Affected owners are urged to give a ring to their nearest Ford dealership and fix the problems free of charge.
