Ford Motor Company is recalling 300 model year 2011-2012 Explorer SUVs to replace steering gears that have been installed as service parts in September 2013 and January 2014.
“The affected gears may lock, preventing the driver from being able to steer the vehicle,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a statement, adding that “the inability to steer the vehicle increases the risk of a crash”.
The recall is expected to commence on January 24, when Ford will start notifying owners and dealers will begin replacing the faulty steering gears with new ones. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673 (recall number 13S14) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
In case you missed it, Ford also issued a recall for about 4,500 E-Series vans built in May 2011 over bubbling windshields.
