Ford Production Lines Get Wi-Fi Tech

Being the provider of the now famous SYNC software on its vehicles, American manufacturer Ford found itself in a bit of a jam when it launched the MyFord Touch. The jam consisted of the fact that the systems had to be updated separately with the SYNC software for MyFord, which meant time was wasted.

To fix that issue, Ford began installing Wi-Fi access points on its assembly lines so that the SYNC is being delivered as the cars are still in production. Aside for the time gained with this idea, Ford also eliminated the countless SYNC hardware modules needed for the system.

“Using wireless software installation via Wi-Fi, we can stock just one type of SYNC module powering MyFord Touch and loaded with a basic software package,” says Sukhwinder Wadhwa, SYNC global platform manager.

“We eliminate around 90 unique part numbers, each of which would have to be updated every time a change is made – this system really boosts quality control.”

According to Ford, the wireless technology in its production lines allow the transfer of 300 megabytes of data, ranging from system color schemes to SYNC app Traffic, Directions & Information.

MyFord touch is an "intuitive connected driver experience" which will replace many of the traditional vehicle buttons, knobs and gauges.

It features more voice commands, LCD screens that can be customized and five-way buttons like the ones found on cell phones and MP3 players. By using them, drivers can choose which information is displayed through a button click, voice command or touch-screen tap.
