Whenever a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 lines up at the start line, one has big expectations from it. After all, the new generation is the Blue Oval’s most powerful street-legal machine ever, dwarfing even the menacing GT supercar.
Nonetheless, the driver still plays a decisive role, and handling all that thrust requires lots of practice, which is why the outcome is never predictable. But how does the blue collar super sports car (or muscle car if you may) handle itself against a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat?

Well, unless the insanely powerful sedan features any mods, then it should have no problem beating it into submission. The Hellcat's supercharged 6.2-liter V8 generates 707 hp (717 ps / 527 kW) and 650 lb-ft (881 Nm) of torque. This is enough to help it sprint to 62 mph (100 kph) in a supercar-rivaling 3.4 seconds before running out of breath at 204 mph (328 kph).

As for the Mustang Shelby GT500, it too uses a supercharged V8, albeit with a 5.2-liter displacement. The power unit is punchier, producing 750 hp (761 ps / 560 kW), yet at 625 lb-ft (847 Nm), the torque is not on par with the Charger SRT Hellcat. From naught to 62 mph (0-100 kph), it needs 3.1 seconds, and the automaker claims that it can deal with the quarter mile in less than 11 seconds.

Now, it’s one thing to read about the specs and a totally different story to see an actual drag race between the two. Fortunately, they met at the Byron Dragway, in Illinois, not long ago, putting their money where their mouths are. So, which one do you think was faster down the quarter mile? How about trying to guess the outcome before scrolling down and hitting the play button, and see if you’ve nailed it right after?
