Not long ago, the Ford Motor Company recalled certain 2022 and 2023 model year Ford Mustang vehicles over unintentional steering caused by a secondary steering torque sensor with inverted polarity. The problem will be remedied by means of a software update for the power steering control module, with owners to be notified in the period between August 5 and August 12, 2024.
Closer to the present day, the Ford Motor Company extended the aforementioned recall to more pony cars, the F-150, Expedition, and its Lincoln-branded cousin. Recall number 24E-055 concerns electronic power assistance steering gears sold as replacement service parts for the 2018 to 2023 Ford Mustang, the 2018 to 2020 F-150 pickup truck, 2018 to 2021 Expedition, and the 2018 to 2021 model year Lincoln Navigator.

Prior to filing the recall documentation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Dearborn-based automaker was aware of two warranty claims potentially related to the recall c condition. Happily, the second-largest automaker in the United States isn't aware of any reports of accident caused by incorrect EPAS calibration.

As you might have guessed by now, Ford Motor Company dealers have been instructed to contact customers who purchased or had the service gears installed in their vehicles. Affected owners will be given two choices: full refund in exchange of the purchased steering gear assembly or software update for the power steering control module.

The remedy update will calibrate the secondary torque sensor to the correct polarity, thus eliminating the risk of a steering wheel that may turn unintentionally and without prior warning. All service gears come from Nexteer Automotive. Previously controlled by GM, the supplier was purchased by Pacific Century Motors in 2010 for an estimated $450 million.

Owner notification letters will be mailed as well, but affected owners are better off contacting Ford customer service or their preferred dealership for more information. That said, 2018 was a big year for the Mustang, F-150, and the body-on-frame SUVs.

The S550-generation Mustang received all-LED front lights, a digital instrument cluster, a ten-speed automatic, dual injection for the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, and dropped the 3.7-liter Cyclone V6 in favor of the 2.3-liter EcoBoost I4. Because the Mustang GTD still hasn't entered production, the S550-gen Shelby GT500 still is the most powerful series-production 'Stang of them all.

In the F-150's case, the 2018 model year mid-cycle refresh saw the light-duty truck get SYNC 3 infotainment, a standard rearview camera, and the 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6. Due to disappointing customer demand, there's no diesel to speak of available for the current-gen F-150.

Twinned with America's favorite pickup, the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator entered their fourth generations in 2017 for model year 2018. This marked the switch from a six- to ten-speed automatic transmission, high-strength aluminum alloy for the body, and boron steel for the frame. Both the Expedition and Navigator come with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 exclusively.
