Ford Mustang Mach-E Efficiency Has It Trailing Competitors, Especially Model Y

For a first attempt, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is shaping up to be a pretty damn good EV, even though not exactly on the revolutionary side. Still, speaking strictly from a powertrain point of view, the Tesla Model Y looks to be by far the better choice.

Ford Mustang Mach-E vs Tesla Model Y vs VW ID.4 EPA ratings
According to the media headlines, the electric crossover from Tesla had its share of problems, but they had nothing to do with its ability to drive. Well, in some cases, that depends on how important it is for you to have a roof over your head while you do that.

Lately, though, we feel as though the infamous build quality mishaps of the Model Y have begun to die down, which could either mean that Tesla has managed to iron them out or the public has grown tired of them and so the media stopped offering coverage. Either way, that's good news for Tesla.

Another piece of good news came courtesy of the Environmental Protection Agency and its detailed ratings for Ford's Model Y competitor. Elon Musk says Tesla's ultimate aim is to help with the industry's complete transition to electricity but judging by how desperately it defends its top position (look at everything that's going on with the Porsche Taycan and the Lucid Air), we feel as though remaining on top is just as big of a priority for the company as any other less menial goal.

Well, it looks as though the Ford Mustang Mach-E won't be much of a threat. The EPA figures for the Blue Oval EV show the longest range for any of the four Mach-E versions is 300 miles (483 km), 26 miles (42 km) short of what the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD offers. So, not only does the Y come out on top, but it also offers a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup as well as a considerably smaller battery pack (75 kWh compared to almost 100 kWh).

According to the EPA, the Mach-E version with the lowest range is the AWD model with the standard battery option that can only cover 211 miles (340 km). Fit the extended battery, and that figure will jump to the 300 miles (483 km) we've talked about earlier. In between these two sit the standard battery RWD version with 230 miles (370 km) and the extended battery AWD version with 270 miles (434 km).

Considering the battery capacity and the range figures, it's clear the Ford Mustang Mach-E suffers from poor efficiency. Based on that criterion, Ford's EV is below many of its competitors with a best combined MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) value of 95. By comparison, the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD gets 127 MPGe, whereas the leader in this regard, the Model 3 Standard Range Plus, scores as high as 141.
