Throughout its existence, the American race billed as The Greatest Spectacle in Racing gave us neck and neck action, high-speed crashes and a few very special pace cars. One of the latter comes in the form of this 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang Indianapolis 500 pace car.

Described as "the most significant historic Mustang in the world," this pony doesn't boast with the stock 260 mill, but a Ford GT40-derived 289 cu.in. (4.7L) V8 engine. In addition to that, Charlotte iconic tuning outfit Holman Moody upgraded the factory suspension.

Even the gearbox is an experimental Toploader 4-speed wearing a C3 bellhousing, turning a '59 Galaxie limited-slip around 3.25 gears. With that array of oily bits, it would have been a shame if this 'Stang wouldn't be loud enough for everyone to enjoy its V8 burble. That's why the exhaust features a resonator-free system that sends exhaust gases and good ol' vee eight harmonics via a cross-flow muffler.

As for the exterior of this vintage drop-top pony, there's a lot to like about it. If we're to pick our favorite details, those are the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car lettering and the 7.75-14 Firestone 500 retro goldlines around faux stainless knock-off wheels. Currently in the inventory of RK Motors Charlotte, this extremely rare convertible Ford Mustang painted in Fleet White can be yours for a whopping $1,099,000.

Mind you, for that money you do get a vehicle that's been restored with 95 percent original components.
