The automatic transmission of the Mustang GT being tested by Australia's NSW Police overheated, with the pony now being blacklisted.
Anybody who's gotten behind the wheel of the S550 Mustang can easily notice the progress made by the Blue Oval, with the latest iteration of the pony car showing sportscar levels of performance, from the GT trim upwards. We tend to associate the new 'Stang's performance with the reliability assets, but is this actually true?
Well, if you ask the NSW (New South Wales) Police, Australia's oldest law enforcement group, the answer will be a polite, but firm "no."
The authorities have recently given a Mustang GT the NSW Police uniform, with the muscle car being subjected to the highway patrol tests any vehicle must pass before joining the force.
The Ford started off well, passing a deceleration test at the Goulburn police driving academy, but the automatic tranny, mandatory for police vehicles, overheated after three minutes of hooning, as the Aussie version of The Daily Telegraph writes.
It appears the vehicle entered the limp mode, being delivered to the local Ford dealership in order to receive the required servicing attention.
However, the failure means the NSW Police won't acquire Ford's pony, with the highway patrol set to approach other European brands for future testing.
The effort is part of a nationwide plan that sees police forces seeking replacements for their current vehicles, namely the Fold Falcon and Holden Commodore. The muscle sedans need to be replaced since both automakers are closing their Australian factories that bring these cars to life.
"Normal" vehicles, such as the Hyundai Santa Fe or the Toyota Camry, have already entered the force, set to be used for transporting suspects. However, when it comes to keeping the highways safe, the performance requirements mean rigorous testing is required.
Since we're talking about public money here, the authorities are looking for a melange between bang-for-buck and practicality. As a result, the list of candidates includes vehicles such as the Volkswagen Golf R Wagon. As you can see, when the long arm of the law needs a workout, things aren't exactly simple.
