First revealed in 2014, the current generation of Ford’s iconic model has managed to rake up a six-month backlog in markets like Australia and the United Kingdom, while also beating traditional competitors in other markets.

The success of the new Mustang is credited to multiple factors – introducing the model in countries where it was not available through the official network, developing a right-hand drive version, and its overall package.

Customers in Australia must wait up to 10 months to get a V8 Mustang, while the four-cylinder EcoBoost unit peaked a waiting time of nine months. According to local Ford representatives, the Mustang has become their second-biggest selling model, right after the Ranger, a pickup truck.

As Automotive News notes, the Ford Mustang was launched last year in 25 markets where it was previously unavailable. Some of these markets were lusting for an official version of the Mustang, and the Blue Oval is now focusing on squeezing in as many right-hand-drive Mustangs on the production line to satisfy demand.

Ramping up production is not an easy task, but it is worth it, as 27,000 RHD Ford Mustang units were sold in the first year of production for this version.

It is interesting to discover that the Mustang outsells the Audi TT and Porsche 911 in their home country, as well as the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Charger on its home turf.

The Mustang did not always have the upper hand against its direct competitor from General Motors, which it first out-sold in 2009. The result was replicated last year, and it is about to happen again in 2016.

In Europe alone, Ford sold over 20,000 Mustang units since it began shipping them 12 months ago. The Blue Oval’s pony car is the top-seller in its class in South Africa, The United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. Just imagine what kind of market for after-sales accessories and tuning will be generated in some of these countries.

However, about 80% of all Mustangs made are first sold in the USA. On its home turf, the Mustang outsold the Camaro by almost 33,000 units, which is an incredible result. Ford covers 46% of the market in the Mustang’s segment thanks to its sales figures.
