To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Mustang Boss 302's iconic 1970 Trans-Am championship, and to build on the success of the Mustang FR500C, Ford Racing announced a new race-prepared road version of the Mustang, the 2011 Ford Racing Boss 302S. The new version slots in between Boss 302 Laguna Seca street car and the Boss 302R Grand-Am race car, and is ready for track days and road racing in a number of SCCA and NASA classes.
Ford will begin delivering up to 50 of these beasts to their lucky owners in the second quarter of 2011. The mean machine will bear a hefty price tag of US $79,000, but that's a small price to pay for what you'll get in exchange. The 302S will draw its power from a 5.0L four valve V8 BossR engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, while stopping power will be provided by a Brembo race brake system. A FIA Spec 6-point roll cage and Recaro seats with safety harnesses will protect the driver in case things get nasty.
The model you see here is a prototype of the 302S, developed by Tiger Racing of Covina, CA. Veteran driver Paul Brown will be racing the car in the SCCA World Challenge GTS class. The prototype is very similar to the Boss 302S unveiled at PRI, although there are various visual and technical differences.
